CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was developed to alleviate the symptoms of a range of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral disorders. The versatility and efficacy of CBT makes it one of the most beneficial forms of therapy for individuals struggling with a wide array of concerns. On this page, I’ll detail what CBT is, how it helps, and what you can expect from CBT sessions.

What Is CBT?

CBT is an adaptable and innovative approach to therapy that alleviates symptoms of a variety of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral health issues. This therapy approach works by increasing awareness of how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected. From there, you can explore ways of changing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors to reduce distressing symptoms.

Who Can Benefit from CBT?

CBT is utilized in a variety of situations, including alleviating the adverse effects of:

  • Anxiety disorders – social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and specific phobias.
  • Low mood – depression, suicidal ideation, and low self-esteem.
  • Addictions – substance use disorders, tobacco use, and problem gambling.
  • Relationship issues – marital concerns, divorce, and difficulty in other personal or professional relationships.
  • Life transitions – changes in location, job, or other aspects of life.

What Happens During CBT Sessions?

At your first CBT session, I’ll get to know you and the concerns that brought you into the office by asking you a series of questions to better understand your needs and goals. Together, we’ll develop an ongoing plan to help you make positive changes to your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By learning skills and tools to make these positive changes, even small ones, people often experience a ripple effect that improves thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. You’ll practice the new skills you develop between sessions, discuss the results with me at the next appointment, and adjust your approach as necessary to achieve the desired results.
